The ugly and degrading execution of Saddam Hussein has shocked even the harshest critics of Saddam. George Bush is calling his hanging as a milestone on the road to Iraqi democracy,"
The reality is that the execution has further increased the sectarian divide. Now there is no hope of reconciliation. The mishandling of Saddam trial and execution in public in the 18th century style has turned the former dictator into a hero.
Now Arabs see in him as a rare Arab hero who stared death in the face and did not
blink.
In my opinion American folly in Iraq has made Iraq people forgot his crimes against his own people. People in the Middle East will embrace his memory as an epitome of courage and resistance. They will forget that he was responsible for the deaths, torture and imprisonment of tens of thousands.
The fact that Saddam was sent to the gallows on the day a billion Muslims were commemorating the patriarch Abraham's willingness to sacrifice his son to God – Eid al Azha – will add a religious texture to Saddam's legacy.
Western media propagate that Saddam killed thousands of Kurds with chemical bombs in 1988. There is doubt he killed many Kurds. They hide the fact when the United Nations Sub-Committee on Human Rights wanted to condemn Iraq for rights violations. It was great Americans, who saved from from UN censure. US pressure forced Canada and the Scandinavian countries to vote against the resolutions.
Stephen C. Pelletiere, the CIA's senior political analyst on Iraq during the Iran-Iraq War , made an interesting claim in The New York Timess January 2003 that the "condition of the dead Kurds' bodies, however, indicated they had been killed with a blood agent – that is, a cyanide-based gas – which Iran was known to use."
Critics say that Saddam was executed to save the US from embarrassment. The US wanted to stop the genocide trial of the Kurds, which started in August 2006. They allege that trial could also have
shed light on the links between Iraq and the U.S. during the Iran-Iraq
War. At that time Saddam was a U.S. ally.
It would be shocking to many Americans that Saddam's Bath Party came into power with the help of CIA. Hundreds of Iraqi leftists, identified by the CIA,were systematically murdered.
His hurried execution appeared to be cover-up of American's illicit relationship with Saddam, not justice.
